Marathas Demand OBC Quota; OBC Leaders Warn of Social Collapse
The Maharashtra government’s decision to allow Marathas to obtain Kunbi certificates, effectively granting them access to the OBC quota, has triggered strong opposition from OBC community leaders. They argue that this move threatens the constitutional rights of existing OBC groups and will erode their share in political representation, jobs, and education.
OBC activists claim Marathas are already benefiting from SEBC and EWS quotas, and this demand is driven more by political ambition than genuine social backwardness. They fear the inclusion of Marathas will dominate OBC representation, pushing smaller, marginalised castes further into the background.
Tensions have escalated at the ground level. There are reports of strained personal and business relations between the two communities. In some areas, OBC students have allegedly been expelled from Maratha-run institutions, and people have begun avoiding social interaction.
OBC leaders warn that social harmony is collapsing, and the situation may worsen if the issue isn’t resolved.
