Hyderabad: Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu cautioned that the growing trend of announcing free schemes for electoral gains is hampering the nation’s development. Speaking to reporters, he said that many state governments are increasingly focusing on short-term populist measures instead of long-term progress.
Naidu pointed out that such welfare schemes are leading to rising debts, which in turn restrict economic growth and investment in key infrastructure. He emphasized that borrowing for productive purposes—such as irrigation, power, and other developmental projects—can be beneficial, but excessive spending on freebies is unsustainable.
Naidu urged governments to prioritize education and healthcare, calling them vital sectors that can empower citizens and strengthen the country’s foundation. He concluded that real progress depends on responsible governance and a focus on sustainable development rather than politically motivated handouts.
