India has a proud history of Nobel laureates who have made remarkable contributions across diverse fields. Rabindranath Tagore became the first Indian Nobel laureate in 1913, receiving the award in Literature for his work Gitanjali.
In 1930, C.V. Raman won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the Raman Effect. Mother Teresa was honored in 1979 with the Peace Prize for her humanitarian work, followed by Amartya Sen in 1998 for Economics, and Kailash Satyarthi in 2014 for his efforts toward child rights and education.
Among persons of Indian origin, Har Gobind Khorana (Medicine, 1968), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (Astrophysics, 1983), Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Chemistry, 2009), and Abhijit Banerjee (Economics, 2019) have also earned this global recognition. Their achievements continue to inspire generations, reflecting India’s rich legacy in science, literature, and humanity.
