Bhopal woke up to a real-life crime thriller on Thursday when the Lokayukta raided retired PWD Chief Engineer GP Mehra’s homes and properties, uncovering an astonishing amount of wealth.
What started as a routine probe into disproportionate assets quickly turned into one of Madhya Pradesh’s most sensational corruption cases. Investigators found cash, gold, silver, and assets so unusual that they shocked everyone—including 17 tonnes of honey stacked neatly at Mehra’s farmhouse.
At his Manipuram Colony residence, officials seized Rs 8.79 lakh in cash, jewellery worth nearly Rs 50 lakh, and fixed deposits totaling Rs 56 lakh. At his luxury Opal Regency apartment, they recovered Rs 26 lakh in cash, 2.6 kg of gold worth Rs 3.05 crore, and 5.5 kg of silver.
Mehra’s farmhouse in Saini village revealed a surreal display of opulence: six tractors, 32 cottages under construction, seven completed cottages, a private pond with fish farming, a cowshed, a temple, and luxury cars including a Ford Endeavour, Skoda Slavia, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Ciaz.
The Lokayukta also raided KT Industries, linked to Mehra’s family, seizing equipment, raw materials, cash, and documents. By evening, the total haul included Rs 36.04 lakh in cash, gold, silver, fixed deposits, insurance policies, share documents, multiple properties, and luxury cars. Forensic teams are now tracing Mehra’s financial trail and benami investments.
