Pre-Poll Promises vs. Economic Reality: Bihar’s Budget Dilemma
As Bihar heads toward elections, the state government’s focus on welfare schemes and pre-poll sops is drawing scrutiny amid concerns over its economic health. For 2025–26, Bihar has allocated just under ₹42,000 crore for capital expenditure—only 14% of its total budget—raising questions about its investment in infrastructure and job creation.
The majority of spending is directed toward salaries, subsidies, and welfare schemes, which, while politically strategic, may offer limited long-term economic returns. Unemployment remains a pressing issue, and the state continues to lag behind national averages in per capita income, industrial growth, and private investment.
Economists warn that excessive populist spending could crowd out critical development expenditure. With youth migration continuing and job opportunities scarce, experts stress the need for policy focus on sustainable investments, education, and skill development.
Bihar’s economic choices ahead of the polls could shape its development trajectory for years to come.
