US President Donald Trump faced disappointment as the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize went to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado for her tireless efforts to promote democracy and push for a peaceful transition from dictatorship in Venezuela.
Trump had spent months claiming he deserved the prize, saying he helped end seven wars, including conflicts in India-Pakistan, Israel-Iran, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and more. The White House promoted him as “The Peace President,” sharing photos and messages highlighting his diplomatic efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also publicly supported Trump’s nomination.
However, experts and the Nobel Committee prioritize long-term, multilateral efforts over short-term diplomatic wins. Historians noted that while Trump sought to broker peace quickly, the results haven’t proven sustainable.
Trump reacted with criticism, pointing to past presidents like Barack Obama, who won the prize in 2009. He claimed his achievements in peace were greater than those of previous laureates. Despite his campaign, Trump did not win, confirming that the Nobel Peace Prize rewards sustained work for democracy and lasting global peace, rather than short-term or politically-promoted efforts.
