Trump and Takaichi Strengthen U.S.-Japan Ties with Critical Minerals Agreement
U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signed a framework agreement to secure the supply of critical minerals and rare earths, essential for electronics and defense industries. The deal aims to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on China, which dominates global processing of these resources.
The agreement includes coordinated investments, streamlined permitting, and measures to address unfair trade practices. Both nations also discussed stockpiling and collaboration with international partners to enhance supply chain security.
This initiative is part of a $550-billion investment package, covering shipbuilding, agriculture, energy, and increased purchases of U.S. soybeans, gas, and pickup trucks. The deal strengthens economic and strategic ties between the U.S. and Japan while ensuring long-term access to critical resources necessary for technological and industrial development.
