White House Limits Journalist Access to Press Secretary’s Office

The White House has issued a new directive restricting journalists’ access to the Press Secretary’s office, citing security and procedural concerns. According to a memorandum from the National Security Council, reporters will no longer be allowed into Room 140, commonly referred to as “Upper Press,” without scheduling a prior appointment. The move has sparked criticism from media organizations, who argue that limiting access could hinder transparency and the free flow of information to the public. White House officials, however, maintain that the restriction is aimed at ensuring orderly press operations and safeguarding sensitive areas, not curbing press freedom. Journalists previously had relatively unrestricted access to the space, which serves as a key hub for briefings, interviews, and press interactions. The decision comes amid ongoing tensions between the administration and media outlets over coverage of government policies and internal communications.
