Days after seeking a trade truce with China, US President Donald Trump has admitted that Washington is also a “threat” to Beijing. Speaking to CBS News, Trump said both nations constantly monitor each other, calling the rivalry “very competitive.” He added that cooperation could make both countries “bigger, better, and stronger.”
Trump also warned that China is expanding its nuclear arsenal “rapidly.” He said the US has the largest stockpile, followed by Russia, but China could catch up within five years. The president revealed he discussed “denuclearisation” with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump defended his recent order to resume nuclear weapon testing, claiming China and Russia are also conducting secret tests.
Acknowledging China’s strength in rare earth minerals, Trump said the US had countered with restrictions on airplane parts. He admitted that both sides acted “a little irrationally” during past trade tensions.
Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright clarified that upcoming nuclear tests will not involve explosions. He said the tests will focus on system checks to ensure new weapons meet design standards.
