A North Carolina deputy shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who charged at him with a wooden plank during a chase, officials said Friday.
The incident happened Thursday near Raeford, about 90 miles southwest of Raleigh. The State Bureau of Investigation will review the case, following standard procedure.
Deputies from Hoke County found 68-year-old Connie Linen dead in her home after a welfare check. Investigators said her grandson was the suspect and had already been charged with first-degree murder.
Later, Lee County deputies spotted the boy hiding behind an abandoned mobile home in the Cameron area. When they approached, he ran away, picked up a two-by-four, and rushed toward one of the officers. The deputy fired, striking the teen.
Deputies described the boy as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. Emergency responders confirmed his death at the scene.
“This has been a tragic and emotional situation for everyone involved,” said Hoke County Sheriff Roderick Virgil. He urged the community to show compassion and patience as the investigation continues.
