Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has once again stirred debate within his party by openly criticizing dynastic politics in India. In an article titled “Indian Politics: A Family Business,” published by Project Syndicate on October 31, Tharoor argued that political power in India has long been concentrated within a few families, especially the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Referring to Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Tharoor wrote that this lineage helped cement the idea that political leadership could be inherited rather than earned. He warned that when leadership is determined by family name instead of merit or dedication, governance quality suffers.
Tharoor called dynastic politics a “serious threat” to Indian democracy and urged a shift toward meritocracy. He proposed internal party elections, legal term limits, and voter awareness programs to promote capable leadership.
The remarks have reportedly upset Congress leaders, who remain silent on the controversy. Party communications head Jairam Ramesh and spokesperson Pawan Khera declined to comment. A senior leader dismissed the issue, saying Tharoor often seeks attention.
Despite criticism, Tharoor’s article has reignited the debate over political inheritance and the need for reform in Indian democracy.
