The only survivor of June’s Air India crash, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, has spoken about his emotional and physical pain since the tragedy in Ahmedabad.
Ramesh, a 39-year-old British citizen from Leicester, called his survival “a miracle” but said he lost his brother, Ajay, in the crash. “God gave me life but took all my happiness,” he told the Press Association. “It completely broke my family. My brother was my strength and my everything.”
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed on June 12, shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and 19 people on the ground. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said the plane lost fuel supply to its engines before impact. The report did not assign blame.
Ramesh revealed he suffers from constant flashbacks and struggles to sleep more than a few hours each night. He also has pain in his leg, shoulder, knee, and back, and cannot work or drive. “When I walk, I walk slowly. My wife helps me,” he said.
His advisers said doctors in India diagnosed him with PTSD, but he has not received treatment since returning to the UK.
