Fix Voter Lists with Care, Not Chaos
The Election Commission of India’s recent acknowledgment of widespread inaccuracies in voter lists is a long-overdue and welcome step. However, its approach to fixing the problem must be cautious and transparent. The recent exercise in Bihar, which led to the sudden deletion of thousands of genuine voters, serves as a warning. Cleaning electoral rolls is essential to uphold the integrity of elections, but arbitrary deletions can disenfranchise legitimate citizens and erode trust in the democratic process. The solution lies in using technology responsibly, improving coordination with local bodies, and ensuring public participation in verification. The process must balance accuracy with inclusivity, protecting every eligible voter’s right to be heard. A cleaner voter list strengthens democracy only when it is achieved through fairness and due diligence—not haste and bureaucratic overreach.
