Supreme Court Orders High Courts to Publicly Disclose Judgment Delivery Timelines
The Supreme Court of India has directed all High Courts to make public the timelines of their judgments — including how many cases each judge has reserved, how many have been pronounced, and the time taken for uploading them online.
A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi observed that this data should be accessible to everyone to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the judicial system. The Court noted that delays in pronouncing or uploading judgments often affect litigants’ rights and public trust in the justice delivery process.
It further suggested that each High Court should maintain a dashboard or public database showing the number of pending, reserved, and delivered judgments, along with timelines. All High Courts have been instructed to submit compliance reports within four weeks and to follow a uniform format for publishing such information going forward.
