India’s Carbon Emissions Rise More Slowly in 2025
India’s carbon emissions grew at a significantly slower pace in 2025, rising by only 1.4% compared with a 4% increase in 2024, according to the Global Carbon Project. The report attributes this moderation to a favourable monsoon, which lowered temperatures and reduced the demand for cooling across much of the country. This, in turn, lessened electricity consumption during peak summer months.
Another major factor behind the slower rise was the continued expansion of renewable energy. India added substantial solar and wind capacity in 2025, helping offset emissions from coal-based power generation. The shift also reflects long-term policy efforts aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving energy efficiency.
Despite the improvement, the report notes that India remains one of the world’s largest emitters due to its growing economy and expanding energy needs. The slower rise in 2025, however, marks a positive step toward meeting future climate goals.
