China Faces Moral Dilemma Over Cryopreserved Wife and New Partner

China

China is gripped by a new ethical debate after the husband of the country’s first cryogenically preserved woman entered another relationship. The case has raised difficult questions about love, loyalty and the future of life-extension science, according to the South China Morning Post.

Gui Junmin, 57, chose cryopreservation for his wife, Zhan Wenlian, in 2017 after doctors said she had only months to live. He signed a 30-year contract with the Shandong Yinfeng Life Science Research Institute. Zhan, then 48, became the first person in China to undergo the experimental procedure through a free volunteer program.

Gui lived alone for two years. In 2020, he suffered a severe gout attack that left him helpless until his relatives intervened. The incident made him confront the risks of living without support.

A mutual friend later introduced him to Wang Chunxia, an insurance agent. Their bond deepened, and she began caring for him through health struggles, including heart surgery. Gui praised her kindness and commitment.

However, he admits his late wife remains irreplaceable. He calls his choice “utilitarian” and says Wang has “not entered his heart”. His comments have triggered fierce online criticism, with many accusing him of emotional betrayal. Others say he deserves companionship.

Gui remains torn, unsure how marriage to Wang would be viewed if Zhan is revived. He now stands between past love, present need and an uncertain future.
