West Bengal private veterinary college opens in Hooghly district, marking a milestone in veterinary education. The JIS College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (JISCOVAS) is the first private institution of its kind in the state, designed to meet the growing demand for trained veterinarians.

Bridging the Veterinarian Shortage in West Bengal
India currently faces a severe shortage of veterinary professionals, with only 61,943 trained veterinarians against a requirement of over 1.5 lakh. By 2040, the demand is projected to rise to 2.84 lakh. The new West Bengal private veterinary college aims to bridge this talent gap and strengthen animal health services across the state.

Comprehensive Courses and Practical Training
JISCOVAS offers the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) programme, a five-and-a-half-year course including a mandatory one-year internship. The college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS) and recognized by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI). With an annual intake of 80 students, the institution ensures a steady flow of skilled veterinary professionals for research, animal care, and livestock development.

Supporting Livestock and Agriculture
West Bengal’s livestock sector contributes nearly 3.89% to the state GDP and over 20% to agricultural GDP. Graduates from the West Bengal private veterinary college will provide essential support to farmers, industries, and research institutions, boosting productivity and animal health standards.

Admission and Eligibility
Admissions require NEET qualification. General category students must secure 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English at 10+2 level, with age eligibility between 18 and 25 years. This ensures students are academically prepared for this rigorous, practice-oriented programme.

The launch of the West Bengal private veterinary college is expected to create job-ready professionals and strengthen veterinary infrastructure across the state for years to come.
