Conrad Sangma Education Reforms: CM Reaffirms Commitment to Improving Meghalaya Schools

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma addressing education reforms at Sohra event

Conrad Sangma education reforms were highlighted again as Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reiterated that improving the state’s education system is a top priority. He acknowledged that despite high spending, the system still faces major structural challenges.

Addressing a gathering in Sohra, Sangma admitted that the education system in Meghalaya has become complicated due to deep-rooted systemic issues. Despite substantial financial investment over the years, he said these hurdles have prevented the state from achieving the quality of education it envisions.

The Chief Minister stated that the government has already begun initiatives to streamline the sector, including rationalisation of schools and restructuring administrative frameworks. These steps, he said, are expected to bring gradual but meaningful improvements.

Sangma stressed that all educational decisions must be centred around students. He urged teachers, school authorities, and managing committees to ensure that every policy or action prioritises the needs of children rather than institutional or administrative convenience.

The remarks were made during the inauguration of the Ramakrishna Mission College in Sohra—the first college established by the Mission in the Northeast—affiliated to Captain Williamson Sangma State University. The event saw the presence of Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Shella MLA Balajied Kupar Synrem, and Swami Achyuteshananda, Trustee of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

Appreciating the Mission’s long-standing contribution to education, Sangma highlighted its role in shaping disciplined, empathetic, and value-driven students. He emphasised that building strong human capital is the most important investment any government can make.

Sangma also assured that infrastructure challenges faced by Mission-run schools—including poor road connectivity, inadequate electricity supply, and water shortages—will be taken up individually and resolved.

He thanked the Ramakrishna Mission for its dedication and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working jointly to provide quality education to children and youth across Meghalaya.
