Nearly 50,000 women took over Lower PMG Square as the Anganwadi Workers Protest Bhubaneswar rocked the state capital on Monday. The Anganwadi Workers Protest Bhubaneswar united workers and helpers from across Odisha, demanding a fair salary, social security, and long-overdue respect for their service. Many said they provide essential care to children and mothers, yet still struggle to survive.
The protesters pushed an 11-point charter of demands. They sought a monthly salary of ₹18,000 for workers and ₹9,000 for helpers, arguing that current wages fail to reflect rising living costs. They also insisted on recognition as government employees to ensure job security, proper leave, health benefits, and service dignity.
Workers urged the state to introduce monthly pensions—₹5,000 for retired workers and ₹3,000 for helpers. Many protested against the term “disengagement,” calling it humiliating for those who have served communities for decades. They want the word “retirement” used formally in records.
Several groups also demanded designation changes under the National Education Policy, seeking acknowledgment as early childhood educators. They said their contribution shapes future generations and deserves respect, not neglect.
Despite the massive turnout, protest leaders assured that demonstrations will remain peaceful while they wait for a government response.
