Protected Chhatris Boost Rewari Heritage Appeal as the Haryana Government formally brings the five historic chhatris under state protection. The decision meets the long-standing demand of local residents and heritage enthusiasts. It also strengthens Rewari’s cultural identity and improves its appeal as a tourist destination.

The five canopies stand in Puran Singh Bagh, opposite the Rezang La Memorial on the Rewari–Gurugram road. Earlier, travellers used these open shelters to rest during long journeys. They paused here at night or during the day to regain their energy. However, the structures slowly declined due to neglect. As a result, INTACH volunteers recently organised a cleanliness drive and removed a large amount of waste.

Sudhir Bhargava, INTACH District Convener, welcomed the protection decision. He said it ensures regular upkeep and long-awaited restoration. Moreover, the move preserves the ancient heritage of Rewari. BJP MLA Laxman Singh Yadav also stated that the government aims to save important monuments across Haryana. According to him, the chhatris now hold a stronger place in the city’s heritage map.

Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Meena explained the architecture of the structures. Three chhatris are octagonal, single-storeyed and crowned with domes. Their pointed arched openings create an elegant view. Meanwhile, the fourth chhatri is square in shape, and the fifth is a two-storeyed rectangular structure. It includes three levels of arched openings and a central chamber that suggests a special purpose.

All the canopies have projecting chhajjas supported by stone brackets. These features protect the walls and showcase excellent craftsmanship. Since the monuments now enjoy protected status, they are set to enrich Rewari’s heritage and attract more visitors in the future.
