Hyderabad: Telangana is witnessing a heavy flood situation as the Krishna and Godavari rivers continue to swell following intense rainfall in Maharashtra and Karnataka. With reservoirs across both basins receiving massive inflows, authorities have lifted all gates to manage water levels and prevent breaches.
In the Krishna basin, projects from Almatti to Nagarjuna Sagar are discharging huge volumes. At Jurala, inflows reached 2.05 lakh cusecs while 2.32 lakh cusecs are being released downstream. The combined flow from Jurala and Tungabhadra has swelled Srisailam reservoir, which by Tuesday morning received 3.39 lakh cusecs. Ten gates were raised by 12 feet, releasing water almost equal to the inflow. Additionally, hydropower plants are discharging over 66,000 cusecs. Nagarjuna Sagar recorded 3.70 lakh cusecs inflow, with outflows slightly higher at 3.80 lakh cusecs.
Meanwhile, the Godavari is swelling rapidly with Nizam Sagar and Sriram Sagar reservoirs also kept wide open. Continuous heavy discharges are adding to downstream pressure.
Villages close to both rivers are on alert as residents recall past flood devastation. Officials are maintaining strict vigil, coordinating across projects, and warning that further rains could intensify the situation.
