India marked its 76th Constitution Day on Wednesday with nationwide celebrations honouring the adoption of the country’s supreme law in 1949. President Droupadi Murmu led the ceremony at Samvidhan Sadan, unveiling the Indian Constitution in nine languages—Malayalam, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Nepali, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese and Marathi—to make the document more accessible and inclusive. Addressing Parliament, she said the framers envisioned a nation committed to justice, equality and the protection of citizens’ rights. The President also highlighted landmark reforms, including the abrogation of Article 370 and the abolition of triple talaq, describing them as steps that strengthened national integration and social justice.
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan praised the Constitution as a symbol of unity crafted by visionary leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a letter to citizens, said the Constitution empowered individuals from humble backgrounds, urging people to uphold rights and duties. Leaders including Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi, MK Stalin, Rajnath Singh and Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar and reaffirmed commitment to constitutional values.
Across the country, over 13,700 events and 2.5 lakh panchayats participated in awareness programmes under the campaign “Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman,” reflecting widespread civic engagement.
