Goa: Uzbekistan’s 19-year-old prodigy GM Javokhir Sindarov scripted history by becoming the youngest-ever FIDE World Cup champion, defeating China’s Wei Yi in the rapid tiebreaks on Wednesday. The classical games ended in two solid, tension-filled draws, with both players opting for controlled, risk-free play that pushed the final toward the faster time formats.

In the first rapid game, Sindarov pressed with a slight endgame advantage but couldn’t break through Wei Yi’s precise defence. The second rapid, however, showcased the Uzbek star at his absolute best. Demonstrating nerves of steel, accuracy, and relentless pressure, Sindarov slowly squeezed out a winning endgame, forcing Wei Yi’s resignation on move 60.

Sindarov, who became a grandmaster at just 12 years old, entered the event as the 16th seed but delivered a remarkable campaign in a tournament marked by major upsets and early exits of top favourites. His semifinal victory over compatriot Nodirbek Yakubboev also came via tiebreaks, underlining his mastery of rapid formats.

With this win, both Sindarov and Wei Yi secure their places in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, moving one step closer to a future World Championship challenge.
