The Maharashtra government has decided to cancel birth certificates issued solely based on Aadhaar. The move aims to improve the accuracy of official records and prevent misuse. Officials say relying only on Aadhaar for registration can lead to errors and duplicate entries in the system.
Under the new directive, birth certificates must include proof of birth issued by hospitals, municipal corporations, or panchayats. Parents who received Aadhaar-only certificates will now have to apply for corrected certificates using proper documentation.
The state’s Health and Family Welfare Department clarified that this step is part of a wider initiative to strengthen civil registration processes. “Our goal is to maintain authentic and verifiable birth records across Maharashtra,” said a senior official.
Parents can approach their local municipal or panchayat offices to update or reissue birth certificates. Required documents typically include hospital discharge slips, delivery records, or other official proof of birth. The government has set a deadline for parents to complete corrections to ensure compliance.
Officials also emphasized that this cancellation does not affect Aadhaar itself. Citizens can continue using Aadhaar for identification, but it cannot serve as the sole proof of birth.
Experts say the move will help reduce administrative errors and curb potential misuse of Aadhaar-only certificates for school admissions, welfare benefits, or identity verification.
Parents are urged to act promptly and submit the required documents to avoid delays in obtaining valid certificates. Municipal authorities are expected to assist citizens in updating records and reissuing certificates efficiently.
