Kerala’s Population to Rise Until 2041, Then Decline: IIMAD-PFI Report
Kerala’s population is projected to continue rising until 2041, after which it is expected to decline, according to a recent report by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMAD) and the Population Foundation of India (PFI). The study highlights demographic trends that could have significant implications for the State’s social and economic planning.
Life expectancy in Kerala is forecast to increase from 75.1 years in 2026 to 82.9 years by 2051, reflecting improvements in healthcare and living standards. At the same time, the State is expected to witness a sharp decline in the proportion of children. By the middle of the century, children are projected to account for just 12.8% of the population, the lowest among Indian states.
The report underscores the challenges Kerala may face with an ageing population, including increased healthcare demands and potential labour shortages. Policymakers are urged to consider these projections in planning education, healthcare, and social security systems.
