Guwahati: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Guwahati Zonal Unit has carried out a major operation, dismantling an international drug trafficking network operating along the Myanmar–Manipur–Assam corridor. The syndicate had been using dense forests in Manipur and river routes in Assam to evade security agencies while transporting high-grade heroin.
Acting on intelligence gathered over several weeks, NCB officers launched a coordinated operation on December 1. Near Silchar, a motorboat moving along the Barak River was intercepted. During the search, officials recovered 6 kg of high-quality heroin concealed inside the vessel. Two traffickers were arrested on the spot.
Initial investigations indicate that the smugglers used a combination of jungle pathways and river channels to avoid detection, making this route a preferred corridor for cross-border drug movement from Myanmar into India.
The NCB’s successful action marks a significant blow to the international narcotics network and highlights the increasing use of river routes for drug trafficking in the Northeast.
