ICMR–NIRRCH Study: High IVF Costs Put Heavy Financial Burden on Couples
A recent ICMR–NIRRCH study has found that the high cost of infertility treatments, especially IVF, is placing a heavy financial burden on couples across India. According to the study, the average out-of-pocket expense for a single IVF cycle exceeds ₹1 lakh in both private and public hospitals, making treatment inaccessible for many.
Researchers noted that most couples require multiple cycles, further increasing costs and causing long-term financial stress. The study also highlighted indirect expenses, including diagnostic tests, medications, travel, and loss of wages, which add significantly to the overall burden.
Experts say the findings underline the need for policy interventions such as insurance coverage for infertility treatments, subsidised care, and greater public awareness. The study emphasises that infertility is a recognised medical condition and should be treated as a public health priority. It urges governments and healthcare institutions to take steps to make fertility treatments more affordable and equitable for all.
