Gopalkrishna Gandhi Calls for Open Government and Responsible Critics in India

Gopalkrishna Gandhi called for a government in India that is open to criticism, alongside critics who are willing to engage in self-reflection. Speaking in Bengaluru, he emphasized that such balance is vital for the health of democracy.
“Elections, the life-breath of democracy, have run headlong into corruption,” Gandhi said, stressing the need for transparent governance and ethical political practices. He warned that both government accountability and responsible critique are essential to maintain public trust.
He highlighted that citizens must be vigilant and informed, while critics should ensure their arguments are constructive and based on facts. Gandhi urged political leaders to welcome scrutiny and for civil society to maintain self-awareness in its assessments.
The former diplomat and governor pointed to recent political and electoral developments as examples of how corruption can erode democratic values. He encouraged dialogue and reforms that strengthen institutions and prevent misuse of power.
Observers noted that Gandhi’s comments come at a crucial time, as citizens and political commentators debate the role of ethics, accountability, and transparency in governance.
