US President Donald Trump has signaled that his administration may double tariffs on rice imported from India after American farmers complained about cheap foreign rice entering the market. According to Bloomberg, producers told Trump that subsidies in exporting countries hurt US rice prices.
Trump, while announcing a $12-billion bailout package for farmers, said the government would investigate how much low-priced foreign rice is entering the US market. He hinted that strict action and higher tariffs may be necessary.
He also suggested raising tariffs on fertilizers imported from Canada. During a discussion, CEO Merrill Kennedy of Kennedy Rice Mill said most imported rice comes from India, Thailand, and China, and urged Trump to double the tariff.
The US currently imposes a 50% tariff on India. Trade talks between the two nations will resume on December 10–11, with Indian Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal leading the negotiations.
