The State government is preparing to launch women-operated bike and auto services in major cities to improve safety for women commuters. The plan focuses on secure travel during early mornings and late evenings, when risks often rise.
Officials say women-operated bike and auto services will also open new job opportunities for women in the transport sector. The project came up during a recent review meeting led by senior transport officials.
The scheme includes professional driver training, help with vehicle purchase, and clear certification. Authorities will also set up dedicated pick-up points in busy urban areas to ensure safer boarding.
The transport department plans to work with ride-hailing companies, transport unions, and self-help groups. These partnerships aim to expand the service quickly and smoothly.
Digital safety features will play a key role. Live GPS tracking, emergency alert buttons, and app-based monitoring will support both drivers and passengers.
Urban mobility experts welcomed the move and said it will reduce reliance on unsafe travel options. Women’s organisations praised the initiative for supporting financial independence and confidence.
The first phase will begin in Hyderabad. After training and certification, the government will extend the service to other cities.
