Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam seeks court nod to regain custody of its elephants
Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam moves Madras High Court seeking to take back custody of its elephants, stating that it has created proper facilities for their care and upkeep. The Mutt approached the court after the animals were earlier shifted to government care citing welfare concerns.
Justice V. Lakshminarayanan heard the matter and issued directions to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden to inspect the facility developed by the Mutt. The court noted that the inspection would help assess whether the infrastructure meets animal welfare standards.
The Mutt informed the court that it had developed a 2.94-acre facility at Konerikuppam, equipped to house the pachyderms in a safe and humane environment. It assured that trained staff, veterinary care, and adequate space were available for the elephants.
The judge directed the wildlife authorities to submit a detailed inspection report before the next hearing. The court said a decision on returning the elephants would be taken after reviewing the findings.
Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam moves Madras High Court as part of its efforts to regain custody while ensuring compliance with legal and welfare norms.
