Shiromani Akali Dal opposes the Centre’s proposal to change MGNREGA funding to a 60:40 ratio between the Centre and states. The party strongly criticised the move, calling it unacceptable and harmful to rural employment.

In an official statement, the party said the proposal weakens the core spirit of MGNREGA. It argued that the scheme guarantees employment to rural households and should remain fully funded by the Centre. Akali Dal leaders warned that shifting the burden to states would defeat the scheme’s original purpose.

The party said Punjab’s agriculture-based economy and large rural workforce would face severe consequences. It added that forcing states to bear 40 percent of the cost violates cooperative federalism. According to the party, the change will reduce acceptance and effectiveness of the scheme nationwide.

Shiromani Akali Dal urged the Union government to reconsider the proposal immediately. It demanded restoration of 100 percent central funding for wage payments. The party said this structure protects states from financial stress while addressing rural poverty and unemployment.

The party also targeted the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab. It claimed the state already struggles to contribute its share in several central schemes. Leaders warned that if Punjab must fund MGNREGA wages, poor workers may not receive timely payments.

Akali Dal said financially stressed states lack resources to meet the new ratio. It warned the change could reduce jobs and weaken rural economic security.
