The CBI job fraud case in Assam ended with a strong message from the judiciary. A special CBI court in Guwahati sentenced an Army personnel to three years in prison for cheating a woman by promising a government job.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the convict. The judgment was delivered on December 15. The convicted person, Vijay Kumar Gupta, served as an MT driver in the Army Service Corps Battalion.
The Central Bureau of Investigation registered the case in May 2019. A Brigadier had filed the complaint. Investigators found that Gupta cheated a woman between 2011 and 2018 during his posting in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh.
He falsely assured her that he could secure a government job for her son. In return, he took ₹1.5 lakh from her. Gupta misused his official position and Army uniform to gain her trust.
The CBI filed a chargesheet in December 2019 against Gupta and another soldier, SK Pandey. The court framed charges in March 2022. After a detailed trial, the court acquitted Pandey due to lack of evidence.
The judge convicted Gupta under relevant IPC sections and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court said such crimes damage public trust in government institutions.
