Tamil Nadu Removes Over 97 Lakh Voters from Draft Electoral Roll After SIR
Tamil Nadu has removed over 97 lakh voters from its draft electoral roll following the Summary Revision (SIR). Officials said this was done to update records and remove duplicate or inactive entries.
Among those deleted, 66.4 lakh voters had either shifted residences or were absent from their registered addresses. The revision aims to ensure more accurate and reliable electoral data.
Chennai saw a significant impact, with over a third of its registered voters removed from the rolls. Authorities said the deletions were carefully verified to avoid mistakes and ensure fairness in the voting process.
Election officials encouraged citizens to check the updated electoral rolls online or at local offices. Those affected by the deletions can submit claims or corrections before the final roll is published.
The Election Commission of Tamil Nadu said the SIR process strengthens electoral integrity and ensures only eligible voters are listed. Officials stressed that periodic revisions help maintain transparency and fairness in the democratic process.
