Chapra bonfire deaths shocked Bihar’s Saran district after four members of one family died due to toxic fumes from a bonfire lit inside their house. The incident took place late Friday night in Ambika Colony under Bhagwan Bazar police station area of Chapra.
According to local officials, the family lit a bonfire inside a closed room to protect themselves from the cold. They then went to sleep without ensuring proper ventilation. During the night, smoke and poisonous gases filled the room, causing suffocation.
In the morning, neighbours noticed something was wrong when no one responded. They forced the door open and found seven family members unconscious. Four of them had already died on the spot.
The deceased included an elderly woman and three young children, one of whom was an infant. The three surviving members were rushed to Chapra Sadar Hospital. Doctors said their condition remains critical, and they are receiving intensive treatment.
Police reached the spot soon after and began an investigation. Initial findings point to carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death.
Officials have warned residents not to light fires or bonfires inside closed rooms. The Chapra bonfire deaths have sparked renewed concern over winter safety in low-income households.
