The United States has formally issued a notice to India, cautioning against potential trade frictions as the deadline for former President Donald Trump’s proposed 50% tariff hike approaches. The move comes amid Washington’s renewed focus on recalibrating trade ties with major partners, particularly countries with which it has a significant trade deficit.

According to reports, the Trump administration’s team has outlined plans to enforce sweeping tariff measures on a wide range of imports, including those from India. These tariffs, if implemented, could severely impact sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and engineering goods, where India enjoys a strong export presence.

Officials in New Delhi have expressed concern that the steep tariff could hurt India’s competitiveness in the US market, which remains one of the largest destinations for Indian exports. The government is reviewing its strategy and is expected to open high-level talks to prevent disruption to bilateral trade worth billions of dollars.

Trade experts warn that if negotiations fail, the tariffs may trigger retaliatory measures, straining ties between the two democracies. While both nations have previously managed to overcome trade disagreements, this latest development is seen as a critical test for the resilience of the Indo-US economic partnership.
