Students from the Northeast studying in Dehradun have decided to stay back in the city after the murder of fellow student Anjel Chakma. They said fear would not drive them away from their education or daily lives.
Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, died in a stabbing incident earlier this month in the Selaqui area. The crime triggered fear and anger among students from the region.
Unity Over Fear
In the days after the incident, several students discussed returning home. However, student groups soon agreed to remain united and continue their studies in Dehradun.
“We will not run away. We want justice and safety,” said a student representative. Many students said leaving the city would only weaken their demand for accountability.
Thousands of students from northeastern states study in Dehradun, which remains a major education hub.
Protests and Demands for Justice
Students have organised candlelight marches and peaceful protests across the city. They have demanded the arrest of all those involved in the murder.
They have also called for better safety measures around hostels and student housing areas. Student leaders said regular police interaction would help rebuild confidence.
Police Action and Assurances
Police have arrested several suspects linked to the case. One accused remains absconding. Investigation teams continue search operations.
Officials said they have increased night patrolling in sensitive areas. Police have also assured students of strict action against the guilty.
Community Appeals for Calm
Local residents and community leaders urged students to remain calm. They also supported demands for justice and stronger security.
The students said they would continue their protests peacefully until authorities deliver justice. Their resolve reflects a wider call for safety, dignity, and equal protection.
