Congress launches MGNREGA save movement from Chandigarh, announcing a nationwide Gandhian campaign to protect the rural employment scheme. The decision came after an extensive meeting at the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters. Senior leaders, MPs, MLAs, and party office bearers joined the deliberations.
Haryana Congress chief Rao Narender Singh said the party will adopt peaceful democratic methods. He announced fasts, symbolic protests, district-level press conferences, and door-to-door awareness campaigns. Congress will organise ward-level sit-ins and later gherao the state assembly. Leaders will also hold regional rallies to mobilise rural voters.
State in-charge BK Hariprasad said MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of employment to rural families by law. He described the scheme as the backbone of the rural economy and a lifeline for the poor. He said the party will follow central leadership directions strictly.
Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda alleged fund cuts and delayed wage payments. He claimed over 60 percent of workers face payment delays. Hooda warned that weakening MGNREGA will harm poor families.
Congress MP Randeep Surjewala accused the BJP of changing the scheme’s core structure. He said Congress designed MGNREGA to empower villages and women. MP Deepender Hooda called the move authoritarian and promised sustained resistance.
