Sikkim High Court Gets New Chief Justice

Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque taking oath as Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court

Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque has assumed charge as the new Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. He took the oath in a ceremony held in Gangtok, marking the start of his tenure. The event was attended by Governor Om Prakash Mathur, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, other state ministers, senior judges, and members of the legal fraternity.

Justice Mustaque succeeds Justice Biswanath Somadder, who retired in December 2025. His appointment was approved by the President of India following recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium. The elevation comes under Article 217 of the Constitution, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

Before joining the Sikkim High Court, Justice Mustaque served as a judge at the Kerala High Court. He was initially appointed as an additional judge in 2014 and became a permanent judge in 2016. He also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court in 2024.

Born on June 1, 1967, Justice Mustaque began his legal career in 1989 after enrolling as an advocate. He practised in multiple areas, including arbitration, mediation, and public law. Over the years, he represented educational institutions and worked on cases involving national and international law.

Legal experts welcomed his appointment, noting his experience will strengthen the Sikkim judiciary. Observers said he may bring new focus to case management and court administration. Residents of Gangtok and the legal community expressed hope that his tenure will improve efficiency and transparency in the High Court.

Justice Mustaque’s arrival reinforces the Sikkim High Court’s leadership and is seen as a significant step in maintaining judicial stability in the state. Authorities said his experience and background will be valuable in guiding the court through current and future challenges.
