US-India trade tensions over Russian oil purchases are rising after strong remarks from senior White House advisor Peter Navarro. In a TV interview, Navarro accused India of funding Moscow’s war by continuing oil imports from Russia. He even called the Ukraine conflict “Modi’s war,” sparking controversy. Critics argue his comments unfairly target India, while ignoring larger Russian oil buyers like China.
Navarro claimed India’s trade and tariff policies hurt American workers, businesses, and taxpayers. He argued that while the US spends billions supporting Ukraine, India’s Russian oil purchases increase the burden on American consumers. His criticism extended beyond policy, calling Indian officials “arrogant” for defending their sovereign right to buy energy from any source.
The US has now imposed 50% tariffs on Indian imports, with a recent 25% hike specifically tied to oil trade with Russia. China, despite buying more Russian oil, has faced no such penalties.
India pushed back strongly, saying its energy sourcing is based on market needs, not politics. Prime Minister Modi stressed that India will protect its economy, especially agriculture, even at a cost. The dispute highlights deepening US-India trade tensions over Russian oil purchases amid global energy and security challenges.
