Turkman Gate tension demolition was reported in central Delhi after authorities carried out a pre-dawn drive to remove encroachments around a mosque, leading to clashes and heavy police deployment. The operation was conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi with support from Delhi Police, following court directions to clear illegal constructions in the area.
The demolition began in the early hours of the morning, earlier than the announced schedule. This sudden timing led to confusion among local residents, many of whom gathered near the site as bulldozers moved in. As officials proceeded with the removal work, tempers flared and a section of the crowd began protesting.
According to police officials, some individuals resorted to stone pelting, targeting security personnel deployed at the site. Several police personnel suffered injuries during the incident. To prevent the situation from spiralling further, police used tear gas and other crowd-control measures to disperse the gathering.
Authorities said the situation was brought under control after additional forces were rushed to the area. Security was tightened, and movement around Turkman Gate was closely monitored to avoid any further unrest. Police later registered cases against unidentified persons involved in violence and obstruction of official duty.
Officials clarified that the demolition drive did not damage the mosque structure. The action focused only on removing unauthorised constructions around the religious site and nearby public land. They added that the drive was carried out strictly as per legal orders and was not aimed at any community.
Local residents expressed concern over the early-morning operation, saying better communication could have prevented tension. Meanwhile, police continued to maintain a strong presence in the locality to ensure peace.
The Turkman Gate tension demolition incident once again highlights the challenges faced during encroachment removal drives in densely populated and sensitive areas of the capital.
