U.S. Sets Oil Conditions for Venezuela’s New Regime

The Trump administration has reportedly placed strict conditions on Venezuela’s new interim government before allowing expanded oil production. U.S. officials have told the administration led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez that Caracas must sever economic ties with China, Russia, Iran and Cuba. Only after meeting these demands would Venezuela be permitted to pump more oil.

According to officials cited in U.S. media, Washington also wants Venezuela to partner exclusively with the United States on oil production. The country would be required to prioritise American buyers when selling its heavy crude. China has long been Venezuela’s closest energy partner and remains its largest oil customer.

The pressure follows last week’s U.S. strikes that led to the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro. Since then, Venezuela has faced severe political and economic strain. U.S. officials believe the country is vulnerable because its oil storage facilities are nearly full.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly told lawmakers that the United States can force compliance by controlling oil shipments. Venezuela has already begun shutting oil wells due to storage shortages. Analysts warn further shutdowns could deepen the economic crisis and weaken Rodríguez’s grip on power.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker said the U.S. strategy focuses on controlling oil flows, not deploying troops. President Donald Trump has also claimed that Venezuela’s interim authorities will transfer up to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States. He said the proceeds would be managed under U.S. oversight for mutual benefit.

The White House has not disputed the reports.
