Sikkim welcomed more than 17 lakh tourists in 2025, according to official data, despite a sharp drop in foreign visitors. Domestic travellers accounted for most of the growth, showing the state’s continuing appeal for mountain holidays.
Officials reported that about 17.2 lakh tourists visited Sikkim this year, a rise from 2024. Most visitors came from nearby Indian states and major cities. They were drawn by the state’s natural beauty, including hills, lakes, and cultural landmarks.
Foreign tourist numbers fell significantly in 2025. Authorities said slower global travel and restrictions in some countries contributed to the decline. While interest from abroad remains, it could not match the growth of domestic tourism.
The Tourism Department promoted Sikkim through online campaigns, travel fairs, and cultural festivals. They also highlighted adventure tourism, homestays, and eco-tourism, which helped boost domestic bookings.
Hotels and tour operators reported strong reservations during peak seasons such as summer and festivals. Many local businesses benefited from the higher number of Indian visitors, which helped balance the drop in foreign tourists.
Tourism supports jobs in hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and food services. Officials said they are taking steps to attract international travellers as global conditions improve.
Overall, Sikkim’s tourism sector showed resilience in 2025. The growth came mainly from domestic tourists, ensuring steady economic benefits for the state.
