Mizoram is currently facing a severe cold wave, with temperatures plunging across the state. In Khawzawl, the mercury fell to –3.4°C, marking one of the lowest readings in recent years. Residents, especially in hill areas and higher altitudes, are experiencing an intense winter chill.
The Meteorological Department explained that a western disturbance interacting with local weather patterns caused the sharp drop in temperature. Clear skies and cold winds have intensified the chill at night, while frost has appeared in several areas of Aizawl district and nearby regions.
Health officials have advised people to stay warm, particularly children, elderly residents, and those with respiratory issues. They suggested wearing multiple layers, drinking warm fluids, and avoiding long exposure to cold during early mornings and late nights.
School authorities in frost-prone areas are reviewing attendance policies and may allow students to stay home if the cold worsens. Farmers and horticulturists have expressed concern about frost affecting crops. Agriculture departments have urged growers to use protective coverings and keep a close watch on young plants until temperatures rise again.
The cold wave is expected to continue for several more days. While daytime temperatures may remain mild, night and early morning chills will persist due to clear skies and dry air. Authorities are monitoring the situation and continue to issue safety advisories for residents.
The sudden drop in temperatures has reminded locals of the need to take precautions during extreme cold. With careful measures, residents can stay safe and minimize the impact of frost and winter chill across Mizoram.
