Violence marred the ongoing municipal election campaign after Shiv Sena candidate Salim Qureshi was stabbed while canvassing in his constituency on Thursday. The attack took place during a public outreach programme, triggering panic among supporters and local residents.
According to police officials, Qureshi was interacting with voters when an unidentified man suddenly approached and attacked him with a sharp weapon. Party workers and security personnel reacted quickly and restrained the attacker, preventing further injury.
Supporters immediately rushed Salim Qureshi to a nearby hospital. Doctors confirmed that he sustained stab injuries but is currently stable. Hospital sources said he is under medical observation and receiving treatment.
Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and launched a search to trace the accused. Officers are examining CCTV footage from the area and recording statements from eyewitnesses to establish the sequence of events and motive behind the attack.
Shiv Sena leaders strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict action against those responsible. Senior party officials said violence has no place in a democratic process and urged authorities to ensure the safety of candidates during election campaigns.
The attack comes amid intense campaigning ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra. Political parties across the state have stepped up rallies, door-to-door campaigns, and public meetings to reach voters.
Following the incident, police increased security in the area and assured political parties of adequate protection during campaign activities. Election officials stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and will take additional measures if required.
The incident has once again raised concerns over candidate safety during elections, with leaders calling for stricter enforcement of law and order to prevent such attacks.
