Violence marred the ongoing municipal election campaign after Shiv Sena candidate Salim Qureshi was stabbed while canvassing in his constituency on Thursday. The attack took place during a public outreach programme, triggering panic among supporters and local residents.
According to police officials, Qureshi was interacting with voters when an unidentified man suddenly approached and attacked him with a sharp weapon. Party workers and security personnel reacted quickly and restrained the attacker, preventing further injury.
Supporters immediately rushed Salim Qureshi to a nearby hospital. Doctors confirmed that he sustained stab injuries but is currently stable. Hospital sources said he is under medical observation and receiving treatment.
Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and launched a search to trace the accused. Officers are examining CCTV footage from the area and recording statements from eyewitnesses to establish the sequence of events and motive behind the attack.
