The Congress on Thursday attacked the BJP after reports showed that local BJP leaders had entered into unexpected alliances in Maharashtra’s civic bodies. The party said these moves raised serious questions about the BJP’s internal discipline.
Congress leaders asked why the BJP failed to stop its grassroots leaders from forming ties with rival parties. They said the BJP often criticises opposition parties for opportunistic politics but ignores similar behaviour within its own ranks.
The controversy involves municipal councils where BJP councillors joined hands with Congress, NCP, or regional groups to form governing majorities. These alliances surprised local party units and triggered criticism from senior leaders across parties.
Congress leaders said they acted quickly when their own members violated party guidelines. They argued that the BJP should follow the same standards. According to them, accountability must apply equally at all organisational levels.
The BJP rejected claims that it approved any such alliances. Party leaders stated that the high command never allowed local tie-ups with rival parties. They also warned of disciplinary action against leaders who ignored party rules.
BJP officials added that they had issued clear directions to dismantle unauthorised arrangements. They stressed that local leaders must follow the party’s broader political strategy.
The row has intensified political tension ahead of Maharashtra’s municipal elections. All major parties have stepped up campaigning across urban and semi-urban areas.
Political observers believe the controversy could influence voter trust. They say consistency and discipline play a key role in local elections. With polling day approaching, parties are expected to sharpen their messaging on governance and stability.
