The US-India tariff dispute has intensified after House Democrats strongly criticized former President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Indian goods. During a discussion in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, lawmakers warned that the US-India tariff dispute could strain a decades-old partnership, impacting both trade and economic cooperation.
Democrats accused Trump of unfairly targeting India while allowing countries like China to continue importing large volumes of oil from Russia without similar restrictions. They argued this selective approach undermines American credibility and risks hurting US businesses and consumers.
“Targeting India while overlooking other global powers is unfair and counterproductive,” one committee member stated, stressing that the decision could ripple across industries reliant on Indian imports.
Critics also questioned the lack of strategic reasoning behind the tariffs. They pointed out that the move does not align with larger geopolitical objectives, such as countering Russia or supporting Ukraine. Instead, lawmakers fear it could weaken strategic ties with New Delhi at a time when Washington seeks closer cooperation with India in the Indo-Pacific.
Observers now urge a careful reassessment of the tariff strategy to prevent long-term damage to US foreign policy and economic interests.
