China Reaffirms Claim Over Shaksgam Valley Amid India’s Objections
China has reaffirmed its territorial claims over the Shaksgam Valley following objections raised by India, asserting that the region forms an integral part of Chinese territory. The statement comes amid continuing tensions over historical border disputes in the northern sector.
The Shaksgam Valley, covering approximately 5,180 sq km, was ceded by Pakistan to China in 1963 under the Sino-Pakistan Agreement. India has consistently objected to the move, stating that the land was illegally occupied by Pakistan and forms part of the Union Territory of Ladakh. New Delhi maintains that any transfer of Indian territory without its consent is invalid under international law.
Chinese officials, however, reiterated their stance that the Shaksgam Valley is rightfully under Chinese sovereignty, dismissing India’s claims as “historically unfounded.” Analysts said the reaffirmation highlights China’s continued assertiveness in border matters, underscoring the need for careful diplomatic engagement between India and China to prevent escalation along disputed frontiers.
