UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned that a trade war would harm all sides after US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs on Britain and Europe. Trump issued the warning over European support for Greenland. He said tariffs would apply unless the Arctic island is handed over.
Starmer addressed reporters at an emergency press conference on Monday. He said tariffs against allies are wrong and undermine cooperation. He added that strong alliances depend on respect and partnership, not pressure.
Starmer confirmed that he spoke with Trump on Sunday. He urged the US president to seek a solution based on facts and mutual respect. He said Britain would keep diplomatic channels open while defending international law. He also pledged to protect the country’s economic security and living standards.
The prime minister described the situation as serious. He said it would not force Britain to choose between the United States and Europe. He stressed that the UK continues to value close ties with Washington.
Germany’s vice-chancellor said Europe is preparing countermeasures against what he called economic blackmail. Starmer said the UK and EU remain closely coordinated. He added that Britain is not yet considering retaliatory tariffs.
