An eight-year-old Hindu student moved schools in London after alleged discrimination over wearing a Tilak-Chandlo on his forehead. Insight UK said staff at Vicar’s Green Primary School asked the child to explain and justify his religious practice. The group called this request inappropriate for a minor.
The organisation also alleged that the headteacher monitored the child during break times. The child reportedly felt intimidated and stopped playing with classmates. Campaigners further claimed the school removed the pupil from positions of responsibility. They said this action linked directly to his religious expression. If proven, the act may breach the Equality Act 2010, which protects religion.
Insight UK warned that such treatment can harm a child’s emotional wellbeing. The group said no student should feel isolated because of faith. Parents tried to engage school leaders about Hindu traditions. They aimed to explain the religious meaning of Tilak-Chandlo. The advocacy body said school authorities dismissed these efforts.
Insight UK described the situation as an imbalance of power. It said the school failed to respect Hindu religious observance. The group also claimed similar issues forced at least four Hindu children to leave the school.
